"Love Scam": suspect arrested

The scam is called "Love Scam", in German: fraud with feigned love. Through social networks or online dating sites, scammers get in touch with singles, they show affection - and then try to make money. This is precisely what happened to a 69-year-old woman from the district of Lüneburg, as reported by NDR 1 Niedersachsen. But she knew how to help - and a suspected fraudster was arrested.

With a "Love Scam" - fraud with fake love - a man has wanted to capture money. But the meeting with the potential victim in Lüneburg was staged by the police.
Man met via brokerage

That had happened according to police: In February, the woman had met a man via a brokerage. The 40-year-old reported after some time of financial difficulties abroad. He needed money and asked the 69-year-old for more than one million euros.

At the request, the potential victim became suspicious. The woman turned to the police, who staged a meeting to hand over a large sum of money. The man traveled from Europe to Lüneburg, stayed in a hotel. But instead of getting the money at the meeting, the police moved in and arrested him at a restaurant.
Arrest rarely in such cases

That in such a case one of the fraudsters is arrested is very rare, said Hans-Dieter Wilhus, head of the fraud commission, to NDR 1 Lower Saxony. According to his statements, the backers in many cases sit in African countries. They would search the Internet for widowed or divorced women and men.
