Edmonton woman jailed for role in online love scam

An Edmonton woman who assisted the man behind a lucrative online dating scam which used love to dupe women has been jailed for 18 months.


Evelina Sisin, of Chiltern House in Beaconsfield Road, used her bank account to launder money accrued by Hery Agunu, who used dating websites and other social media to portray himself as a white, widowed American businessman, and built a number of other online aliases using details of real people.

Agunu pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by misrepresentation after a bank in the US stopped a payment which they believed to be fraudulent and alerted the US authorities. They handed the case to Operation Podium who tracked Agunu down.

Sisin, who worked alongside Agunu, pleaded guilty to money laundering.

Police have identified 17 victims of the scam across America, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, aged from their mid 50s to late 70s. One victim, a 69-year-old woman from the US, send Agunu £144,000 as a result of the scam. Another lost so much money that she was forced to declare herself bankrupt.
